Walsall 3-0 Shrewsbury Town

  • Published

Two Craig Westcarr goals handed Walsall an FA Cup first-round victory against League One rivals Shrewsbury.

Westcarr also created the Saddlers' third, passing for Romaine Sawyers to convert from 25 yards.

Shrewsbury came closest to a consolation goal when Richard O'Donnell beat away a John Marsden shot but the visitors had no answer.

Westcarr scored in both halves, poking home amid a defensive mix-up before later driving in a rebounded shot.

Shrewsbury Town Manager Graham Turner told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"I think that is the most inept performance from a team I have put out in a long time - it was an embarrassing defeat when you have a scoreline like that.

"Walsall are very good from building up at the back and today our big problem was dealing with long balls.

"It was a horrendous goal to concede - it was a horrible goal. We needed to push on but we never got started. A goal for them got them on the right track - but defensively we were very poor today.

"Walsall started turning on the party tricks at 3-0 and it was a performance from us that is not acceptable."
