St Johnstone have signed former Bolton Wanderers striker Michael O'Halloran on an 18-month contract.

The 22-year-old has not played for the Lancashire club since 2012 but has had loan spells with Sheffield United, Carlisle United and Tranmere Rovers.

O'Halloran, a former Scotland Under-21 international, secured an early release from his Bolton contract before St Johnstone made their move.

The Glasgow-born forward should feature against Ross County on Saturday.

Saints manager Tommy Wright will hope it eases the burden on striker Stevie May, who has scored 15 goals so far this season.

Another of the Perth club's forwards, Steven MacLean, has been out injured since November with a knee injury.

O'Halloran scored three goals in 25 appearances on loan at Tranmere Rovers during the 2012-13 season.
