Matt Tubbs hit his fifth goal in five games to give Crawley a 1-0 win over Peterborough.
Crawley started well in a game in which both sides had chances, with Posh's Ben Nugent having a header saved before Tubbs' effort was blocked.
The deadlock was finally broken after Jack Baldwin handled in the box, and Tubbs kept his nerve to calmly slot past Bobby Olejnik from the spot.
Crawley climb to 13th, and have up to six games in hand on their rivals.
Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson spoke to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:
"I thought we were going to win it. I thought first 15 minutes they started really well so I changed the formation. After that I thought we got general control of the game.
"Second half the final thing that let us down was composure. It looked like it was going to be 0-0 but unfortunately the referee has given the penalty.
"It was a hand ball but he [Jack Baldwin] handled it because the striker has pushed him onto it. The referee has to see it, he hasn't, he's given a penalty and we've lost the game.
"If a game of football was to sum up the season I think today would be it because we've lost another game to a team in the bottom 10. It's just been too inconsistent."
Crawley head coach Guy Whittingham told BBC Sussex:
"I thought we started the game really well and we had three chances in the first half and then we let them back into the game.
"Peterborough are always going to cause you problems.
"We maybe got that luck at the end when the ball was put into the box and it was a penalty. Matt Tubbs has been practising his penalties but not those ones."
"the pressure was on him from last week when you scored one and we felt he was going to bury it into the corner but he calmly chipped it over the keeper."
