Wrexham: Caretaker Billy Barr wants manager's job full-time

Caretaker boss Billy Barr feels he is ready to take the Wrexham manager's job on a permanent basis.

Barr has been in temporary charge of the Conference Premier side since Andy Morrell's departure after two and a half years in charge.

Wrexham lost 5-0 to Luton in Barr's first game in charge, but won 2-0 at Hereford on Saturday.

"I want it and I think I can make a difference," Barr said.

"I'm out of contract soon so I've got to look after me.

"It's no good me saying 'I don't want it' and somebody coming in and straight away I'm out of the door.

"[I'll] put my CV in and be dealt with the same way as everybody else."

Applications for the vacant position need to be received by the club by the end of Monday, 3 March.

Chief executive Don Bircham said he had received several enquiries from interested applicants in the days following Morrell's departure.

Barr, a former Halifax Town, Crewe and Carlisle United defender, was assistant manager under Morrell.

His previous coaching experience includes a spell as caretaker boss at Carlisle and coaching roles at Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday.

The 45-year-old believes he has gained the experience to become a manager in his own right.

"I've not just appeared here. I've been doing this since I was 31 on this side of it, having retired from playing," Barr added.

"It's a 14-year career, nearly. I've got to this point and I feel ready.

"I've felt ready for a while, but I've had a job to do as a number two with Andy.

"That finished and I'll be giving it my best shot to try and get the job."
