Notts County manager Shaun Derry has signed former Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday defender Taylor McKenzie on a free transfer.

The 19-year-old moved to Hillsborough in 2012 after a trial and has spent time on loan with Gainsborough Trinity.

McKenzie, who has signed a two-year contract, did not play a first-team game for the Owls.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old midfielder Kyle Dixon has signed a one-year deal but will switch to playing at right-back.

The Magpies also signed former England striker Alan Smith on Tuesday.

Smith's arrival means Derry will now only play in an emergency.

"Although I will be starting pre-season and making sure I am physically right, I have always said I don't want to be a player-manager," Derry said.

"I want to concentrate on leading the team. With Alan coming in I will be looking at him as a holding midfielder so I am hoping I don't need to worry about me playing."
