Tranmere Rovers sign former Exeter City midfielder Matt Gill

Tranmere boss Rob Edwards has signed former Exeter midfielder Matt Gill as player-coach on a one-year contract.

Gill, 33, was offered a new deal by Exeter, but is the second player in as many days to join Rovers who played for Edwards at his old club last season.

Edwards snapped up free agent Eliot Richards on Wednesday having coached him since he joined the Grecians on loan from Bristol Rovers in January.

"He's someone who will come in and help the club raise the bar," Edwards said.

"He will contribute on the pitch and on the training ground and is someone who will help everyone around the club.

"He'll help the younger players learn about winning, about how to train properly and understand what the club is about," added Edwards, who was appointed as Rovers boss on Tuesday after stepping down as Exeter assistant manager earlier this month.

Gill re-joined Exeter permanently in January from Bristol Rovers having signed a loan deal in October last year.

After beginning his career at Peterborough he spent two years at Notts County before moving to Exeter in January 2006.

He played over 150 games for Exeter over three-and-a-half years, helping them to consecutive promotions from the Conference to League One.

He then joined Norwich City, but failed to establish himself in the first team, spending time on loan at Peterborough and Walsall before signing for Bristol Rovers in the summer of 2011.

"Rob has asked me to come as player-coach which is a great opportunity for me, I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in," Gill said.

"I'm really excited about working with players and to be as much help to them as possible.

"I'm desperate to carry on playing too, enjoy my football and add value to the team."
