Walsall: James Chambers signs new one-year Saddlers deal

Experienced Walsall defender James Chambers has signed a new one-year contract with the League One club.

Chambers, 33, who joined twin brother Adam at Bescot when he joined the Saddlers in August 2012, will be preparing for his third season.

"I'm very pleased to have got this new deal sorted," said Chambers.

"There is a good nucleus of players at the club and, if we can build on that with some new additions, we can look forward to the new season."

His career began alongside brother Adam at West Bromwich Albion, and he has now made 390 appearances for various clubs, also including Watford, Leicester City, and Doncaster.

He has played 68 times for Walsall, the majority of which came last season when he also netted his first Football League goal, a second-half winner against Sheffield United in February.

Walsall finished a disappointing 13th in League One after winning only twice in their final 18 games, having looked like play-off contenders for much of the campaign.

Saddlers boss Dean Smith released eight players, including 17-goal top scorer Craig Westcarr, while captain Andy Butler has moved to Sheffield United after rejecting the offer of a new deal.

But Chambers has followed the lead of fellow defender Ben Purkiss and striker Romaine Sawyers in putting pen to paper on a new deal.

Young midfielders Kieron Morris and Jake Heath have also signed new deals while Saddlers manager Dean Smith, who is yet to make any summer signings, is still negotiating with defender Andy Taylor.
