World Cup 2014: Ins and outs of the final group games
- Published
The exciting and at times unpredictable start to the World Cup means there is much to be decided in the final round of group fixtures.
Here is our guide on who needs to do what to progress into the last 16 in Brazil.
Group G
Country | W | D | L | GD | Pts |
Germany | 1 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 4 |
USA | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 4 |
Ghana | 0 | 1 | 1 | -1 | 1 |
Portugal | 0 | 0 | 1 | -4 | 1 |
Portugal v Ghana; United States v Germany (26 June, 17:00 BST)
Germany and the United States will both qualify if they draw their match in Recife.
Ghana could progress to the last 16 if they beat Portugal and Germany beat the Americans. However, should the US lose by one goal and Ghana win with the same scoreline, the US would go through by virtue of their better head-to-head record against the Black Stars. USA could also go through on goals scored if they are in a high-scoring match.
The Africans could also qualify at the expense of the Germans if Jurgen Klinsmann's United States side record a large victory.
Portugal, who needed a last-minute equaliser against the US to avoid being knocked out, must beat Ghana and overturn a five-goal difference on the Americans.
Group H
Country | W | D | L | GD | Pts |
Belgium | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 6 |
Algeria | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
Russia | 0 | 1 | 1 | -1 | 1 |
South Korea | 0 | 1 | 1 | -2 | 1 |
Algeria v Russia; South Korea v Belgium (26 June, 21:00 BST)
Belgium are already into the next phase, and a point from their meeting with South Korea will guarantee they win the group.
Algeria will make it into the knockout stages for the first time if they beat Russia, though a draw will be enough as long as South Korea do not thrash Belgium to improve their goal difference and finish on four points.
Russia will qualify if they beat Algeria and South Korea fail to beat Belgium.
