Murphy's only previous Norwich goal came against Watford last season

Josh Murphy scored twice as Norwich survived a battling display from League One Crawley to book their place in the Capital One Cup third round.

Debutant Cameron Jerome put Norwich ahead, poking in after goalkeeper Brian Jensen fumbled Steven Whittaker's shot.

Murphy rifled in after the break, but Crawley hit back as Carlos Cuellar sliced into his own net.

Izale McLeod's header was cleared off the line as Crawley piled forward, but Murphy's second killed them off.

The League One visitors had claimed that McLeod's header had been kept out illegally and were again denied an equaliser by Declan Rudd's superb save from Gavin Tomlin.

But teenager Murphy, whose only previous goal for Norwich came against Watford in the same competition last season, had the final say with a crisp strike.

Norwich travel to League Two Shrewsbury in the third round.

Norwich manager Neil Adams: "It was really pleasing for us to have so many academy products in there tonight.

"I didn't expect as many bumps and bruises after the weekend and we had to rest a few. But when we won the FA Youth Cup we said there needed to be a pathway for those players, and you can definitely see that exists now.

"With those knocks, we had to put the trust in these kids then. I know them as well as anyone, I know what they're capable of and you saw some really good performances tonight."

Crawley manager John Gregory: "The best team lost, as simple as that. We got a goal back and the momentum swung back to us. I thought we were comfortable in the first half too.

"I always felt we could get back into the game, and the longer it went on the more we dominated. We just couldn't get that second goal."
