Mauro Milanese's first game in charge of Leyton Orient ended in defeat as Preston narrowed the gap on leaders Bristol City to two points.
Callum Robinson met Chris Humphrey's cross to score his first goal for Preston.
Italian striker Gianvito Plasmati had a great chance to level on his debut, but was superbly denied by Jamie Jones.
Then Neil Kilkenny's free-kick was nodded back by sub Tom Clarke for Paul Huntingdon to score Preston's second.
Leyton Orient slip to 19th in League One as former QPR defender Milanese lost his first game after replacing Russell Slade.
The hosts rarely threatened but Jones had to be at his best to deny Jay Simpson one-on-one.
Leyton Orient manager Mauro Milanese told BBC London 94.9:
"In the first half we created good chances and then the game changed.
"They were very clinical and maybe they are second in the table for this reason.
"It is the same story of Leyton Orient at home with Russell (Slade), with Kevin (Nugent) and now with me here.
"The attitude and the spirit was good but we need to be more clinical in front of goal or have some new superstition at home."
