Port Vale 2-1 Barnsley

Port Vale ended a run of six successive defeats as Mark Marshall's late goal gave them a deserved win over Barnsley.

He was lively from the outset and goalkeeper Ross Turnbull had to make a number of saves before being beaten by Michael O'Connor's superb free-kick.

Conor Hourihane levelled from the spot after he was bundled over, but Jordan Slew fired over the bar when he was fouled and Vale were awarded a penalty.

Marshall cut inside and beat two men before firing home to seal the win.

It was no more than Vale deserved after a week which saw manager Micky Adams depart, while Barnsley were left to reflect on a poor seven days that brought them only a single point from three games.

Barnsley manager Danny Wilson told BBC Radio Sheffield:

Wilson on Port Vale v Barnsley

"We were beaten by a very determined team today, first 45 minutes in particular we were second best.

"We had little pockets of play, but certainly not enough to affect the game.

"It's typical that players come out and do that after the manager (Micky Adams) has gone.

"Second half we were much better, created our chances, but we were a shadow of ourselves today and we've got to take it on the chin."
