Derry City ended their Premier Division campaign in eighth place following a 2-1 defeat by Bohemians in Dublin.

City rested key players ahead of next weekend's FAI Cup final but they went ahead through Mark Timlin's strike.

Dinny Corcoran slotted in the equaliser and Jason Byrne's penalty made it 2-1 before Derry defender Ryan McBride went off with suspected concussion.

Corcoran missed a late penalty on a night when Dundalk won the title while Athlone Town were relegated.

Former Derry boss Stephen Kenny saw his Dundalk team beat Cork City 2-0 in the title decider at Oriel Park to take top spot by two points from the Leesiders.

Athlone drew 1-1 with Bray Wanderers to finish three points behind UCD at the bottom.

It was a mid-table encounter at Dalymount Park and for Derry preparation for the FAI Cup decider against St Pat's Athletic at the Aviva Stadium.

City made a bright start and Timlin fired over before Joshua Tracey set up the midfielder to drill in the opener on 13 minutes.

It was a deserved lead but Bohs took control midway through the first half and Derry keeper Gerard Doherty kept out Karl Moore's shot with his legs.

The hosts had a penalty appeal turned down before Corcoran supplied a cool finish beyond Doherty after 33 minutes.

Doherty brought down Steven Beattie for the spot-kick seconds before the break and he was thankful to only receive a yellow card and not a red, which would have ruled him out of the cup final.

Byrne converted and it was a dull second half of few chances, including Tracey fizzing just wide and Doherty denying Corcoran.

McBride is a doubt for the Aviva decider after suffering suspected concussion, which left Derry a player down with over 10 minutes left as they had already made their three substitutions.

Corcoran was fouled by Shane McEleney for the injury-time penalty but the striker missed the target, although Bohs had done enough to secure the three points and move above Derry into seventh.

It was a third straight league defeat for the Candystripes, who only managed one win from their final eight Premier Division matches.
