Everton boss Roberto Martinez had to settle for a point against former club Swansea, who held on for a draw having gone down to 10 men late in the game.

Wilfried Bony had a shot saved for the visitors before they were denied a penalty when Jonjo Shelvey's strike appeared to hit Antolin Alcaraz's hand.

Shelvey was later sent off for a second booking after 72 minutes.

Defender Phil Jagielka failed to put away a header as Everton struggled to test Swans keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Substitute Romelu Lukaku nearly had a clear sight of goal late on but Swansea defender Ashley Williams pulled off a vital interception from a Leighton Baines cross to deny him.

Lukaku also failed to put away a Samuel Eto'o cross - although the Belgian forward appeared offside so the goal might not have counted in any case.

This was the first time the Toffees have failed to score in the league this season, and while home keeper Tim Howard was a virtual spectator, the hosts rarely threatened to break down down the Welsh side either.

For the visitors, perhaps content to stifle their hosts, this was just a second clean sheet in their last 21 away league games - though they have now failed to beat the Goodison Park club in 19 league meetings.

Martinez, taking charge of his 200th Premier League game, was a team-mate, captain and manager of Swansea boss Garry Monk during the former's spell in charge of the Welsh club between 2007 and 2009 and the pair chatted on the touchline before kick-off.

With the game under way, Martinez was soon fortunate not to see his side fall behind.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has seven assists and one goal in nine league appearances this season, slid Bony through on goal bur the Ivorian's shot was saved by Howard.

Swansea also had a strong penalty appeal when Alcaraz appeared to deflect former Liverpool midfielder Shelvey's shot back to Howard with his left hand.

The home side were helped when Shelvey, who had been booked in the first half for kicking the ball away, was sent off for a second booking after he blocked the run of James McCarthy, but they failed to make the extra man count.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez:

"You want to win the game. You are looking at statistics before the sending off-for Swansea and we were in control.

"I'm disappointed by the game as I thought it was going to be more of a spectacle but it didn't turn out to be. I thought we were a little frustrated.

"Overall, it was a good clean sheet because you can leave yourselves exposed. Maybe our tempo in possession was not as sharp as it could have been.

"I haven't seen the replay [of the alleged handball]."

Swansea manager Garry Monk:

"All in all it was a well-earned point.

"It was a cheap yellow which Jonjo Shelvey gave away for the first booking. I explained it to him but he is a clever lad and understands that when you are on a yellow you can't make those kind of challenges."

On being denied a penalty for an apparent handball by Everton defender Antolin Alcaraz: "I didn't know you were supposed to play with two keepers.

"I'd be very pleased if my keeper pulled off a save like that. We didn't get it so what can I say?

"I'm extremely proud of my team - the way they dug in for such a long period. They deserve that point for the effort they put in."
