Oxford United: FA Cup goals 'a dream' for James Roberts

Teenage striker James Roberts said it was "beyond a dream" to mark his first start for Oxford United with two goals in their FA Cup victory over Grimsby.

Roberts signed a new deal with the U's on Friday and repaid their faith with his first senior goals for the club.

"It's something special, that's the cup I used to watch as a boy," Roberts, 18, told BBC Radio Oxford.

"To be a part of it is big - to score one and then another is beyond my dreams."

Roberts made his senior debut for Oxford in a 5-1 loss to Cambridge United in October

U's academy graduate Roberts continued: "I used to buzz off the first round sitting on the sofa watching it with the family."

Roberts hopes he has proven himself worthy of starting place in the league, having made five appearances for the U's off the bench so far this season.

"The past five games I've been pushing for a starting place," he said.

"The gaffer has given me an opportunity and thankfully I've taken my chance. Hopefully that's enough to keep me in there.

"I could have had a hat-trick, but I'm not going to criticise myself - I'm really happy with the two goals."

The U's next travel to York in the league and Roberts added: "We've come off the back of two losses and we said today is going to be the springboard for our season."
