Shrewsbury will travel to Preston in the second round of the FA Cup after Liam Lawrence's second-half goal gave his side a narrow victory over Walsall.
Walsall's Mathieu Manset put an eight-yard header wide, before James Collins and Lawrence went close for Shrewsbury.
Lawrence's fine finish from the edge of the box from Bobby Grant's pass put the hosts ahead after the break.
Adam Chambers was sent off for Walsall with eight minutes remaining for lunging at Nat Knight-Percival.
Walsall, who needed a last-minute equaliser 10 days ago to take this tie to a replay, carried little goal threat throughout, although Romaine Sawyers headed straight at keeper Jayson Leutwiler and Ben Purkiss shot over from close range late on.
Shrewsbury boss Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:
"It's fantastic, but what is most satisfying is the performance. I thought we were superb. We knocked it around on a really poor pitch.
"That's probably the biggest disappointment of the night, how poor the pitch has become.
"To try and pass it in the right way on a really, really poor surface is great credit to the boys."
