Glasgow City: Manager never lost belief in his players

Glasgow City became the first Scottish side to reach the last eight of the Women's Champions League

Glasgow City manager Eddie Wolecki-Black insists he never lost faith that his side would overcome Zurich in the women's Champions League.

Two late goals on Wednesday night in Airdrie sealed City's 5-4 aggregate win and a spot in the last eight.

"Over the years we've played many games when we've got a result when we really needed it so I always had belief," Wolecki-Black told BBC Scotland.

"I said to them at half time I honestly believed we'd still win the tie."

And he added: "We maybe didn't realise just how close it was to the end when we got that winning goal.

"The longer the clock runs down it does become a bit tighter, but it only takes a second to score a goal."

Glasgow trailed 2-1 from the first leg in Switzerland and fell behind on Wednesday night to Cinzia Zehnder's goal.

Abbi Grant and Leanne Ross fired City into a 2-1 lead on the night but Fabienne Humm squared it and left Zurich 4-3 up on aggregate.

Jo Love gave the home side hope after 81 minutes with a fine strike and Suzanne Lappin nodded in the fourth as City became the first Scottish side to reach the last eight of the Women's Champions League.

City head into the draw for the quarter-finals on 19 November and Wolecki-Black said progress to the semi-finals will depend on who his side come out of the hat against.

"The luck of the draw plays a massive part," said Wolecki-Black.

"Because there are some teams who have been over the course for a few years now, but we're just going to go out and enjoy it."

Paris Saint-Germain, the holders VfL Wolfsburg, FFC Frankfurt and Brondby IF are the other teams to have already reached the last eight.

Glasgow won the Scottish Women's Premier League for the eighth time in a row this season, but Wolecki-Black believes the Scottish women's scene is getting stronger, which should help his side in Europe.

"The league is getting tighter, our goal difference has certainly come down from what it's been over the years," he said.

"We're winning games 2-1 and 3-1 so they're far closer then they have ever been.

"Any team going into Europe, it's always a step up, we know that, and thankfully we've risen to the occasion this season."
