Goals from Gary Madine and Frank Nouble gave Coventry City victory over Plymouth

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley described the Sky Blues' Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Plymouth Argyle as a "step" in the right direction.

Just three days after their FA Cup embarrassment against non-league Worcester City, Coventry bounced back to beat League Two side Argyle 2-0.

"As I said to the players, that's merely a step, one of many we have to take," Pressley told BBC Sport.

"We've got a lot of work to do before we put Sunday's performance to bed."

Second-half goals from strikers Gary Madine - the on-loan Sheffield Wednesday player's first for the club - and Frank Nouble ensured that the Sky Blues this time made no mistake against lower league opposition.

Pressley had responded by threatening to "ship out" several of his under-performing Sky Blues players, who he claims are "letting the club down", but he was pleased with City's response.

"Sunday's game was unacceptable for this proud football club," he told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire. "But I got the reaction I expected and we deserved to win.

"There have been advances in technology and tactics in football, but one thing has not changed in the game is the need for hard work. I'm proud of the reaction, but that's the type of performance I expect from a Coventry City side.

"Everybody that came here was looking for that type of response and I have to thank the supporters. They were brilliant with the team and brilliant with me, so I really appreciate that support right now.

"The pain that this football club has suffered over the last few days has been incredible, so I'm very pleased."
