Dave Whelan: Wigan chairman given extra week to respond to FA

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has been given another week to respond to an FA charge over comments he made about Jewish and Chinese people.

The 78-year-old had until 18:00 GMT on 5 December to answer the charge but requested an extension after taking legal advice. This has been granted.

Whelan has denied making racist remarks and insists he was misquoted.

He has also apologised for any offence caused and warned he will resign from his position at Wigan if punished.

Whichever way Whelan pleads next week, a three-person independent regulatory commission will be set up to hear the case.

If he pleads guilty, the commission will decide his punishment. If he pleads not guilty, the commission will have to prove his guilty before deciding any punishment.

The commission is usually set up within 10 days of the accused's response, but in this case they will aim to meet as quickly as possible.
