Barry Molloy leaves Derry City to sign for Crusaders

Long-serving Derry City midfielder Barry Molloy has left the club to join Irish Premiership side Crusaders.

Molloy, a former captain of the League of Ireland outfit, spent 10 seasons at the Brandywell and was recognised with a testimonial match earlier this year.

His final game for the Candystripes came in November's 2-0 FAI Cup final defeat against St Patrick's Athletic.

"Emotional to think that my Derry career has ended - I always gave my all," said Molloy on his Facebook page.

"I know I've never been the best player, but I have always given 100%.

"I've now moved on to a new challenge in a new league but will see you at the Brandywell next season, supporting our local team," added the 31-year-old, who has agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Seaview club.

Molloy, who has also played for Derby County and Drogheda United, was signed by former boss Stephen Kenny and described playing for his hometown club as "a dream come true".

"From day one supporters, family and friends have been amazing to me. It's been an incredible 10 years, with lots of ups and downs, but something I wouldn't change for the world. The memories will always be with me."

Crusaders manager Stephen Baxter has already acquired the services of Institute striker Stephen O'Flynn, who will be available to play for the north Belfast club in January.
