Preston North End 1-0 Barnsley

Paul Gallagher's first-half penalty gave Preston a third successive 1-0 victory in all competitions to keep them within a point of League One leaders Bristol City.

The on-loan Leicester striker converted on 16 minutes after midfielder John Welsh was fouled in the penalty area.

The hosts spurned numerous chances before Conor Hourihane hit the post in injury time for the visitors.

Preston are level with MK Dons and Swindon on 44 points.

Barnsley boss Danny Wilson told BBC Radio Sheffield:

Wilson on Preston v Barnsley

"It was a game where everybody thought we were going to be the whipping boys and we weren't.

"As the work ethic goes I thought we were very good. We got around the ball really well, we pressed them and hassled a very good side.

"We could have got back into it and at 1-0 you're still in the game."
