MK Dons remain second in League One after Daniel Powell scored the only goal in their win at Notts County.
Powell grabbed his fifth goal of the season when he finished off after good work from team-mate Benik Afobe.
The hosts should have equalised in the second half but Ronan Murray's shot was straight at MK Dons goalkeeper David Martin after Colby Bishop's pass.
Dons nearly doubled their lead but Dele Alli's effort hit the foot of the post from 20 yards out.
Notts County boss Shaun Derry told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"I'm disappointed we've not got anything out of the game today. The players have given everything all season, even more so today.
"I thought it was an unbelievably honest performance, once again we've come up against a quality opponent today in MK Dons.
"We gave them a game today, and I think they know that."
MK Dons manager Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"Look at the games we've played in the league recently, everyone one of them could've won the game.
"This month has been so hard for us, so to score the goals we have done means the players have been sensational.
"We played some wonderful stuff today. It was calculated risks they took in certain areas, their goal keeper was excellent too and we're very pleased to walk away with the points.
"You've got to respect the opposition, they made it difficult for us as well.
"The players are in a really ruthless position at the moment. We're looking like a strong group. There's a tremendous camaraderie and togetherness."
