Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph has lost his appeal against the red card he received in their goalless draw with Sunderland on Sunday.

Delph, 25, became the third Villa player in four games to be sent off after a challenge on Jordi Gomez in the Premier League match at Villa Park.

Villa boss Paul Lambert said referee Martin Atkinson's decision was "harsh" and a three-game ban "excessive".

But the club confirmed on Twitter, external that the decision has been upheld.

Striker Gabby Agbonlahor was sent off for a tackle on Manchester United's Ashley Young during the 1-1 draw on 20 December, but the card was rescinded on appeal.

However, the Football Association has fined the club £30,000 for failing to control their players in the wake of the dismissal, after several remonstrated with referee Lee Mason.

The FA said Villa have also been warned about their future conduct.
