Brighton chairman Tony Bloom says they are ready for the transfer window following the appointment of Chris Hughton as manager.
Hughton took charge of the Seagulls on Wednesday and is in need of bolstering his squad, with the loan deals of four players having expired.
"We need to get going quite quickly," Bloom told BBC Sussex.
"I have only spoken briefly with Chris, but in terms of the recruitment we are ahead of the game."
Midfielder Gary Gardner and striker Darren Bent have already returned to Aston Villa, while Norwich winger Elliott Bennett and Nottingham Forest defender Greg Halford have also gone back to their parent clubs.
"We are short of numbers and we will be looking to do some transfer activity," Bloom added. "It is still not easy to bring players in in January as other clubs may not want to let players go."

"I think Chris Hughton is the best option out there as Brighton need an experienced manager who knows the Championship well. "Credit must go to Nathan Jones, who came in for a couple of games and really lifted the whole club in general. There is a belief now and Chris has the transfer window to work with. "He has watched a lot of games while he has been out of work and will know players who will be available to come in and strengthen the squad. He needs to start making a few changes quite quickly." |
Hughton has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Brighton and is aware of the task ahead of him, with only goal difference keeping the club above the Championship relegation zone.
"At this moment Tony has been very positive," the 56-year-old said. "We know where we are as a team and with some of the loan players we have.
"We have quite a lot to go through in terms of the team and the squad, where we need to make improvements and where we can.
"If I look at our position in the league, it is [about getting] some stability in the results and seeing us in a more comfortable position in the league."
Hughton is looking to add one coach to his backroom staff but the former Newcastle and Norwich boss confirmed to BBC Sussex that Nathan Jones, who was assistant under Oscar Garcia and Sami Hyypia and was recently caretaker manager, will remain at the Amex Stadium.
"Nathan has done a fantastic job here and I am grateful for the last two results he has got, as someone looking from the outside with a keen interest," Hughton said.
"He is someone that is well thought of here and respected as an individual and a coach."
