Middlesbrough's Rhys Williams has had knee, pelvic and Achilles problems in the past

Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams will have surgery after scans confirmed he ruptured his Achilles tendon in Saturday's FA Cup win over Barnsley.

The 26-year-old was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after only two minutes.

It was his first start since sustaining a similar injury 11 months earlier.

The injury has been described as "extremely rare," with Boro saying the Australia international has "damaged another part of the tendon", external not related to the previous problem.
