Grant McCann handed Peterborough United coaching role

Grant McCann has won 39 caps for Northern Ireland

Grant McCann is understood to have been handed a coaching role at his former club Peterborough United, but is also set to continue playing for Linfield.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony says McCann, 34, will assist temporary boss Dave Robertson when available after manager Darren Ferguson was sacked by the League One club.

McCann has been quoted as favourite to succeed Ferguson with some bookmakers.

He spent five years at London Road before joining Linfield in January.

The former Northern Ireland international will help Robertson and Aaron McLean prepare the team for Saturday's match against Bradford City.

"I'm delighted that both Grant and Aaron have stepped up to help Dave Robertson whilst both still have playing jobs. They are class acts who would do anything for Posh," said MacAnthony.

Among the other names being mentioned as possible contenders for the Peterborough managerial vacancy are current Rotherham United boss Steve Evans.

Last week Linfield manager Warren Feeney said he was confident that McCann would remain at Windsor Park until the end of the season despite speculation linking his player with coaching roles in England.
