Gernot Rohr set to become new Burkina Faso coach

German Gernot Rohr is close to being appointed the new coach of Burkina Faso, BBC Sport understands.

The 61-year-old ex-Gabon and Niger boss has yet to agree terms and sign a contract but is expected to be unveiled at a media conference next week.

Rohr has been out of a coaching role October 2014 when he brought to an end a two-year spell with Niger.

Burkina Faso have been without a coach since Belgian Paul Put departed after the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Burkinabe were eliminated at the group stage of the competition in Equatorial Guinea this year, falling a long way short of their run to the final in the previous edition.

Following the disappointing result Burkina Faso drew up a three-man shortlist of Rohr, Nigerian Stephen Keshi and Serbian Milovan Rajevac to take over from Put and revive the team.

Rohr took Gabon to the quarter-finals of the 2012 Nations Cup on home soil and also managed Niger at the 2013 edition but failed to get them out of the group stage.

As a club boss, he led Bordeaux to the 1996 Uefa Cup final and steered Tunisians Etoile Sportive du Sahel to third place in the league in 2009.
