Tony Mowbray secured his first win as Coventry City manager as the Sky Blues boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation from League One.

Marcus Tudgay's header opened the scoring for Coventry, before Jay O'Shea's deflected shot levelled.

Sanmi Odelusi's turned in Grant Ward's cross-shot and Frank Nouble robbed Ritchie Humphreys to make it 3-1.

Chesterfield set up a tense finish when Gboly Ariyibi slotted home and Caolan Lavery nearly levelled with a header.

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"We get into the ascendancy in games and then we shoot ourselves in the foot.

"It's important though we still try and play football, so I wont get onto our players but we need to improve our game management.

"The goals were individual mistakes, but I'll give Coventry credit. We struggle to manage games and it will always be our Achilles heel."

Sky Blues manager Tony Mowbray told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire:

"The pleasing thing for me is that a very young defence withstood most of it, and a young goalkeeper made one or two good saves as well.

"It's good that we're scoring goals now, which gives you a chance to win football matches.

"In our predicament, any win is important. If they keep showing the same determination then we should be OK, but we know it's still a long way to go."
