Roberto Martinez: Everton boss hopes win will be 'turning point'

Manager Roberto Martinez wants Everton to use their Europa League win over Dynamo Kiev as a "turning point" in their Premier League campaign.

The Blues came from behind to earn a 2-1 last-16 first-leg win over Dynamo Kiev at Goodison Park on Thursday.

They only have one league win in 2015 and sit six points above the bottom three before the visit of Newcastle.

"On Sunday, we need that level of performance we saw in the second half," said Martinez.

"We were outstanding in the second half. When we get the tempo right and have that expression in our play, we have shown that we are a good team."

In nine Europa League matches this season, Martinez's side have lost just once and beaten Wolfsburg, who sit second in the Bundesliga, Young Boys - second in the Swiss top flight - and now Ukrainian league leaders Dynamo Kiev.

But away from European commitments Everton find themselves with no hope of domestic silverware and have 28 points from 28 league matches - their worst tally at this stage of a season in the Premier League era.

Such form prompted Martinez to admit his side are in a relegation battle and ahead of Dynamo Kiev's visit, the Spaniard talked of understanding "the severity" of their position.

Oleg Gusev's early strike for Dynamo looked set to add to their misery, but a spirited display, with Steven Naismith and the impressive Romelu Lukaku finding the net, gives Everton hope of a quarter-final place.

"Today you saw anxiety in the first 20 minutes but we found that expression in our play," added Martinez, whose side travel to Kiev on 19 March.

"Overall, it was a very good performance and the reaction shows we are a very good team. We are not favourites as the home team always has a little advantage."
