Motherwell: Stephen Pearson signs extension until 2017

Former Celtic and Derby County midfielder Stephen Pearson has signed a two-year contract extension at Motherwell.

The 32-year-old, who has won 10 Scotland caps, started his second spell at Fir Park in January and has committed his future there until 2017.

Pearson was due to be out of contract this summer.

But he said: "I am really pleased we have got this all done and dusted so early. I'm delighted to being staying."

Pearson came through the youth ranks before moving to Celtic for three seasons from 2004.

He moved on to England's second tier with Derby, including a loan spell at Stoke City, and Bristol City before returning to Scotland after a season in the Indian Super League with Kerala Blasters.

"I've really enjoyed working under the manager and with this group of players," he told Motherwell's website.

"Our first priority is to try to stay in the Premiership then rebuild again for next year."

Pearson's new deal was agreed despite Motherwell remaining in a battle to avoid relegation from the Scottish top flight.

Manager Ian Baraclough added: "He has been a huge influence both on and off the park.

"His signing will, I hope, give everyone a boost and it's a real indication of our intention and determination to not only finish this season strongly but with one eye on building for season 2015/16 and beyond.

"We are in positive discussions with other members of the squad and will look to talk with more as the season reaches its conclusion."
