New boss Terry Butcher attracted by Newport County's potential

Terry Butcher says he took the Newport County job as he is excited by the potential at the League Two club.

The former England captain was unveiled as the Exiles' new boss on Friday after being appointed on a two-year deal.

Butcher said he hopes to "exceed expectations" at Rodney Parade and keep the club moving up the Football League.

"Who would've thought years ago clubs like Burnley, Swansea and Bournemouth would've got into the Premier League?" said Butcher.

"Who knows, if all the right things are in place, whether Newport County have the potential to do something like that?"

Caretaker boss Jimmy Dack will oversee Saturday's match at home against Oxford United with Butcher in attendance.

The new boss had been out of work since being sacked as manager of Hibernian in June 2014.

He succeeds Justin Edinburgh, who left for Gillingham in February.

Former Ipswich Town and Rangers defender Butcher's managerial CV also includes spells with Coventry, Sunderland, Motherwell, Brentford, Sydney and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

He takes over a County side set for a third season in League Two after being promoted from the Conference Premier in 2013.

They are three points outside the play-off places with one game remaining, but their inferior goal difference means they are unlikely to overtake seventh-placed Plymouth.
