League One side Rochdale have made striker Donal McDermott their first signing ahead of next season, on a one-year deal following a trial.

The 25-year-old started his career at Manchester City and has had spells at Bournemouth, Huddersfield, Scunthorpe and Irish side Dundalk.

He was most recently been playing non-league football with Salford City and Ramsbottom United.

"There's a special, special talent there," said Dale boss Keith Hill.

"He wants to put into practice the losses of the last two or three years where he's not really made the most of his ability.

"What we've seen since he has been at the football club is desire and a real focus on not losing anymore football time - there's a quality player there and I'm so glad we've signed him."

Rochdale, who finished in eighth place and six points outside the play-off places this season, have already offered new contracts to midfielder Stephen Dawson, defender Tom Kennedy as well as taking up the option on full-back Andy Cannon.
