Queen of the South manager James Fowler refused to write off his side's play-off chances despite losing the first leg 2-1 at home to Rangers.

Steven Smith and Dean Shiels scored either side of a Derek Lyle counter to put the visitors in control of the tie.

However ahead of next Sunday's Ibrox return, Fowler says his team can still cause an upset.

"If we play like that, we can go there and get a result. We're right in there," he told BBC Scotland.

"If we can get the first goal there as well it makes it really interesting. We'll go and play on the front foot there, we'll take the game to Rangers and hopefully we can get a result."

Rangers manager Stuart McCall said he would have settled for a draw, feeling confident that his team can finish the job in front of their own support.

The winner of the tie will face Hibernian over two legs in the play-off semi-final, with the winner of that facing the team who finishes 11th in the Scottish Premiership home and away.

He said: "I'm always confident with the forward players and the creativity we've got that we will create opportunities. But all the hard work still has to be done to get into the next round of the play-offs.

"We know it's only half-time, that's the old manager's cliche, but it is. Really pleased to be going back to Ibrox next Sunday with a victory, I would have settled for a draw.

"We're delighted to be going back with a lead there's no doubt about that. Football can change so quickly, nobody's getting carried away about anything, there's no high fives in there.

"We've done half a job and hopefully it's a sixth of a job and we've still got another five games to go, but we'll see what the future brings."
