Gillingham have signed defender Ryan Jackson on a free transfer from League Two side Newport County.

He was offered a new deal by the Welsh club, but opted to be reunited with former Newport boss Justin Edinburgh on a two-year contract.

Jackson, 24, has made 73 appearances for the Exiles since Edinburgh signed him in 2013 after the player's contract ended at Macclesfield.

"I am delighted to get Ryan on board," Edinburgh told the Gillingham website., external

"He was an excellent performer during my time with Newport and I look forward to working with him once again here at Gillingham."

Jackson began his career with AFC Wimbledon and has also had loan spells at Cambridge United and Fleetwood.

"I can't wait to get started. I've worked with Justin before so he knows how to get the best out of me," he said.
