David Platt named boss of Indian Super League side FC Pune City

David Platt played 62 times for England, scoring 27 goals

Ex-England midfielder David Platt has been appointed manager of Indian Super League (ISL) side FC Pune City.

It will be the 48-year-old's first coaching role since leaving Manchester City in 2013, having managed Nottingham Forest and England Under-21s.

Former Juventus striker David Trezeguet played for Pune as they finished sixth in the inaugural ISL season.

Other big-name stars who featured in the league last season included Alessandro Del Piero and David James.

"I didn't know much about Indian football until the opportunity arose and I spoke to club CEO Gaurav Modwel in London," Platt told the Times of India.

"The more I researched and the more I heard, I became enthusiastic about the strategy of the ISL and FC Pune. There is an ambitious plan and the strategy appealed to me."

The new season kicks off in October.

The ISL runs as a 10-week, eight-team tournament with the aim of increasing the popularity of the sport in a country where cricket dominates.

Platt, who won 62 England caps, played for Aston Villa, Arsenal, Juventus, Sampdoria, Bari, Nottingham Forest and Crewe Alexandra.
