Republic of Ireland v England: How dull was dismal Dublin clash?

Roy Hodgson's England had 14 shots against Republic of Ireland but only three were on target

It was downright dismal in Dublin as England drew 0-0 with Republic of Ireland.

TV pundit Paul Scholes described it as "a waste of an afternoon" and, judging by reaction on social media, most people agreed with the former Manchester United midfielder.

The two teams managed just four shots on target between them in the end-of-season snoozefest at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

But just how boring was it? BBC Sport looks at how the viewers who managed to stay awake reacted and we do our best to recall some of England's other forgettable fixtures.

'A waste of space'

Asked for his view on the match, ITV pundit Scholes said the friendly was "a waste of an afternoon" and "an end-of-season waste of space."

Neil Custis, football writer with the Sun, tweeted: "It's occasions like this which make kids fall in love with rugby."

What you could have done instead

You could have won the World Cup with England - on your games console. Under the default setting, matches on Fifa 15 take between 12 and 15 minutes, meaning 90 minutes would leave you just about enough time to steer Wayne Rooney and co to the final.

Alternatively, you might have watched Jess Glynne performing live. The singer, who had a 2015 UK No1 with 'Hold My Hand' was due on stage at the Parklife Festival in Manchester's Heaton Park at 2.25pm.

If you had fancied something else in Dublin, you could have taken a tour of the Guinness Storehouse in St James' Gate. The venue is home to the world-famous stout and it is recommended visitors take up to an hour and a half to explore.

If you were feeling active, you could have attempted to break the World Hour Record - and still had 30 minutes to recover. SirBradley Wiggins was due to stage his attempt to better the 32.89-mile mark at the Lee Valley Velo Park on Sunday evening.

And of course, there was the Diamond League athletics meeting. You could have got yourself at ticket to the event in Birmingham to watch stellar names such as Mo Farah ... oh.

England's other bore draws

England 0-0 Costa Rica, June 2014: Already eliminated from the World Cup in Brazil after defeats by Italy and Uruguay, Roy Hodgson's team failed to sign off with a consolation victory over Costa Rica. Poor finishing cost the Three Lions, with Daniel Sturridge the main offender.

England 0-0 Honduras, June 2014: We might have know what to expect from England at the World Cup based on their display in the warm-up match before the tournament. The highlight of the goalless draw with Honduras in Miami was the colossal thunderstorm that meant the match had to be halted for 40 minutes.

England 0-0 Montenegro, October 2010: England began their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign in style, winning 4-0 against Bulgaria and 3-1 against Switzerland but Fabio Capello's team were frustrated by a dogged Montenegro team at Wembley. Wayne Rooney lacked spark in attack and it was the visitors who came closest to scoring a winner, with Milan Jovanovic rattling the bar with a drive from distance in the closing minutes.

England 0-0 Algeria, June 2010: Capello's team were held to a goalless draw in the World Cup 2010 Group C fixture in Cape Town. BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty described the performance as "the worst of Capello's reign" while Algeria coach Rabah Saadane said: "I thought they would be better."
