Saido Berahino has 11 England Under-21 caps

England Under-21s forward Saido Berahino has been ruled out of the European Championship in the Czech Republic through a knee injury.

The 21-year-old West Bromwich Albion player was injured during a training session on Wednesday and will be replaced by Wolves striker Benik Afobe.

England manager Gareth Southgate said: "It's a great personal disappointment for Saido."

Berahino has made 11 appearances for England, scoring 10 goals.

Southgate added: "He's very conscious of it not affecting the team. He's been with us from the very first game, scored our first goal and has been a huge part of the reason why we're here.

"It's a great shame he won't be able to finish the job."

Berahino was the top scorer in the tournament's qualifying stages including the winner in the first game of the campaign against Moldova.

He has returned home from the Czech Republic and will be assessed by West Brom medical staff, with the club hopeful that the injury is not too serious.

Afobe, 22, joins up with the squad after an "excellent season" with MK Dons and Wolves, scoring 32 goals in 51 appearances.

The former Arsenal player has made two appearances for England Under 21s, scoring one goal.

"I've kept in contact with him in case something like this happened," added Southgate.

"He's always been super positive about being involved and he's excited by it. He's had an excellent season and he deserves the opportunity."
