National League side Torquay United have signed defender Dan Butler following his release by Portsmouth.

The 20-year-old made his Pompey debut in August 2012 and played 34 games for the League Two club last season.

He is a product of Portsmouth's youth set-up and has also had loan spells at Havant & Waterlooville and Aldershot.

"It was a no-brainer really. He's a good player with potential to play at a very high level," Torquay boss Paul Cox told the club website., external

"He has tremendous experience for a player his age and I'm sure that'll tell in what's going to be a very tough league."

Butler is Cox's third addition to the squad since taking charge last month, joining Tyrone Marsh and James Hurst at Plainmoor.
