Calvin Andrew scored the winning penalty to send Rochdale through to the League Cup second round

Rochdale sealed their place in the League Cup second round after winning on penalties against Coventry City.

Donal McDermott's curling effort beat Sky Blues keeper Reice Charles-Cook to put the hosts in front at the break.

Coventry fought back when Chris Stokes laid the ball to Marcus Tudgay to fire the ball into the net to level the tie.

After extra time, Coventry's Reuben Lameiras struck his penalty against the crossbar, leaving Calvin Andrew to wrap it up and send Rochdale through.

The visitors twice could have taken the lead early on, first through a Tudgay header and later from Sam Ricketts' free-kick, but Dale keeper Josh Lillis was on hand to keep the scores level.

McDermott took the lead with a superb effort that sent Dale ahead at half-time, but Coventry kept pressing and were rewarded when Tudgay found an equaliser to send it to extra time.

But the hosts held their nerve in the shootout, with Andrew ensuring that Dale went through to the League Cup second round for the first time in four seasons.
