Steven Gerrard's LA Galaxy thrashed New York City FC thanks to two goals from striker Robbie Keane.

Frank Lampard had been expected to line up against Gerrard for New York but was not fit enough having only just resumed training following a calf problem.

The former Chelsea midfielder watched from the stands as LA Galaxy eased to victory at the StubHub Center.

Keane scored with a superb chipped finish and tapped in from close range while David Villa netted for New York.

"I've come here to win the league. It's all about finishing strong and taking maximum points," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"It's nice to come out on top and we controlled the majority of the game."

LA Galaxy took the lead when Republic of Ireland international Keane crossed for Gyasi Zardes to glance in a header.

Keane added a second after the break before ex-Tottenham midfielder Giovani dos Santos made it 3-0.

Sebastian Lletget smashed in from close range after an assist from Gerrard but former Spain international Villa reduced the deficit from the penalty spot.

Keane had the final word, though, when he got on the end of a Robbie Rogers cross to ease the ball home.
