Italian champions Juventus suffered a surprise defeat to Udinese in their opening match of the season in Serie A.

Juve won the title by 17 points last season while Udinese spent the majority of last season battling against relegation before finishing 16th.

The Turin club dominated the match but Cyril Thereau struck for Udinese 12 minutes from time to secure the points.

In 40 previous matches on the opening day of the Serie A season Juventus had lost only once, away to Bari in 2010.

On Saturday, former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko made his debut for Roma as they fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 at Verona.

Bosko Jankovic beat Arsenal loanee Wojciech Szczesny to put Verona ahead but Alessandro Florenzi levelled with a long-range strike.

Roma's city rivals Lazio began their campaign with a 2-1 win over Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico.
