Tommy Smith scored his second goal of the season

Tommy Smith's first-half header gave Ipswich Town victory and condemned Leeds United to their first league defeat of the season.

Defender Smith headed home after Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri failed to deal with a corner.

Lewis Cook twice fired just wide for the hosts as they struggled to create.

But late on, Leeds felt aggrieved when the referee booked Sam Byram for a dive when he went down in the area under pressure from Jonas Knudsen.

Uwe Rosler's side had drawn five of their opening six Championship matches, but lost to promotion hopefuls Ipswich at Elland Road for the first time since 2005.

In a first half lacking quality, the visitors, who lost 5-1 to Reading on Friday, took the lead when Silvestri came to punch an inswinging corner but missed and New Zealand international Smith was on hand to head home.

After the break, the Italian keeper was on hand to repel volleys from Daryl Murphy and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, before Leeds came close themselves when Cook fired wide from the edge of the area.

Smith nearly added a second, but he could only head over from Knudsen's cross before Cook again shot wide of the target.

The hosts felt they should have had a late penalty when Byram charged through and went down under Knudsen's challenge. But referee James Adcock booked the substitute for simulation and Ipswich saw out six minutes of added time to take the three points.

Leeds manager Uwe Rosler: "Overall it's disappointing that we didn't show enough courage and bravery to enforce our game on the opposition.

"We got drawn into their style of play and we are not that type of team.

"In the last 15 minutes when Ipswich started to tire, we started to play our game, but it's too late."

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy: "I couldn't guarantee the result but I could guarantee a performance because these players have been a different class over the last two or three years.

"The new players have bought into what we are about as well and the performance they put in got the deserved result.

"We could have had two or three goals, we were a threat on the break and it was much more like us."
