It was a busy weekend across Europe, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring five goals to become Real Madrid's leading all-time La Liga scorer.

Lionel Messi claimed his 287th La Liga goal for Barcelona to celebrate the birth of his second son.

But what are the stories you might have missed? A Premier League failure fires a warning to Manchester United, Juventus unveil an unsettling new mascot, and David Moyes's Real Sociedad continue to struggle in Spain - BBC Sport takes a look.

De Jong fires a warning to Manchester United

Luuk de Jong failed to score in 12 appearances on loan at Newcastle, but the Netherlands international is in prime form as he prepares to take on Manchester United.

The 25-year-old claimed a first-half hat-trick as PSV Eindhoven thrashed 10-man Cambuur Leeuwarden 6-0 to move second behind Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie.

De Jong's unproductive five-month spell at St James' Park ended with his return to Borussia Monchengladbach in May 2014 after Newcastle decided against making the move permanent.

He has enjoyed life more in his homeland, scoring seven goals in six games this season, and 33 in 51 appearances in total since joining the Dutch champions, who host Louis van Gaal's side in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Bayern Munich are behind Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund on goal difference

Thomas Muller gave up the element of surprise with his last-minute penalty as Bayern Munich came from behind to beat Augsburg 2-1 and maintain their 100% start to the season.

The Germany attacking midfielder was asked by Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz where he was going to put the decisive spot-kick, and promptly told him.

"We've known each other for quite a while and it was just a brief exchange," Muller said. "He wanted to know where I was going to shoot, so I told him."

The Manchester United target kept his word to score as Bayern remain second behind Borussia Dortmund.

If you thought Partick's mascot was unsettling

J got a good reception when he came out onto the pitch before the game

Perhaps inspired by Kingsley, Partick Thistle's child-scaring 'angry star' emblem unveiled in June, Juventus have unveiled their own mascot that isn't quite right.

Introducing J, who made his debut at the weekend to what can be described as mixed reviews.

The zany zebra - with a human's body - brought the Italian champions sort-of luck as a late penalty from Paulo Dybala earned their first point of the season in the 1-1 draw with Chievo.

Former West Brom boss Pepe Mel's Real Betis got the better of Moyes

David Moyes may have been in demand over the summer, after the former Manchester United manager claimed he turned down approaches to return to coaching in the Premier League.

However, his Real Sociedad side have so far failed to set La Liga alight this season.

They remain winless in the Primera Division without a goal in their first three games, after losing 1-0 to a Ruben Castro strike for 10-man Real Betis.

La Real's two points have both come from stalemates, to leave them in 13th.

The Azerbaijan league leaders warmed up for their six-hour flight to London with a 1-0 victory over Khazar Lankaran at their Dalga Arena home in Baku.

A fifth consecutive victory was sealed by a goal from Swedish forward Samuel Armenteros attracted a crowd of 1200.

Tottenham make the 5,000-mile round-trip to the Azerbaijani capital in November, and face other less taxing journeys to Monaco and Anderlecht in Group J.

It will be a bigger crowd than for Xavi's debut

Xavi's last competitive club game was in the Champions League final

Spain legend Xavi made his competitive debut for Al-Sadd Sports Club in front of what it is fair to say was a modest turn-out of fans at the Hamad Al-Kabeer Stadium, with 2,253 turning up.

The former Barcelona midfielder, who announced his move to Qatar in May, made 767 appearances for the Catalan club. The 35-year-old set up his side's second goal for South Korean defender Lee Jung-soo in a 4-0 victory against Mesaimeer.

Portuguese striker Hugo Vieira scored twice either side of an equaliser from Alen Stevanovic as Aleksandar Katai's goal sealed victory to help the hosts cement their place as league leaders, with Partizan in third, eight points behind.
