The result leaves Magpies boss Steve McClaren with just one win from his first eight matches in charge

Newcastle's poor start to the season continued as they were knocked out of the League Cup by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

Lewis McGugan's 76th-minute shot from outside the box gave victory to Wednesday, who made 10 changes from their previous match.

Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko had clipped the post before the break.

The result leaves Magpies boss Steve McClaren with just one win from his first eight matches in charge.

How Wednesday's League Cup drama unfolded

The former England manager has just three wins from his last 21 matches, combining results from previous club Derby County.

Those victories came against Wigan, Blackpool and Northampton Town, who Newcastle beat in the second round.

Wednesday were unlucky not to double their lead when hitting the crossbar twice in as many seconds.

Tim Krul tipped Lucas Joao's header onto the woodwork before Sergiu Bus's follow-up crashed over.

Siem de Jong missed two good chances to equalise late on, scuffing one shot wide before volleying over the bar as Wednesday reached the fourth round for the first time in 14 seasons.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal: "We know we beat a very good team with a very good coach in their stadium, so of course we are very happy about that.

"We picked these players to show a different face in relation to the last three matches. We tried to play more compact, block all the ways for Newcastle and with four very quick attackers.

"I am very happy with the players. They were perfect in the strategy that we brought to this match."

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren: "There's not a lot you can say. There are no excuses - back in tomorrow morning, Chelsea Saturday, it's the fighting mentality we need.

"I've been in football too long to be embarrassed. Things like that can happen in football, and, yes, it's a very disappointing result and evening for everybody."
