Rangers had to be patient - Mark Warburton

Rangers manager Mark Warburton believes it would be unfair to label their narrow victory over Dumbarton as a laboured one.

It took until after the hour-mark for the Ibrox side to break down the Sons through two Martyn Waghorn goals.

"It's a tough place to come," Warburton told BBC Scotland. "The pitch is decent; it's big.

"They're very well organised and a lot of teams will come here and drop points."

The 2-1 victory extends Rangers' perfect record in the Championship to seven matches, with them now up to 11 wins from 11 in all competitions.

Ex-Sunderland forward Waghorn is on 11 goals this season after a 20-yard strike and a penalty at the Cheaper Insurance Direct stadium.

"Dumbarton worked very, very hard and we had to be patient," said the former Brentford boss Warburton.

"In the first half I thought we lacked a little bit of care in the final third; we got into good positions but didn't really maximise it.

"But as games go on we're working teams. We're moving the ball and they are having to work hard to stop us.

"As games go on, openings come and we can punish them. I'm delighted to get the two goals and pleased for Martyn Waghorn."

Warburton felt Gedion Zelalem was fouled in the box in the opening minute.

"For me it was a nailed-on penalty," he said.

"I can't see how it's not a penalty and a red card. I never want to see a player sent off but that's a big call early in the game."

Rangers now focus on a League Cup tie with St Johnstone on Tuesday, a match Warburton refers to as a "stern test".

Dumbarton manager Stevie Aitken was proud of how much they competed with their visitors.

"For 60 minutes the game-plan worked really well," he told BBC Scotland.

"We restricted Rangers to very few chances; I think they had one shot in the first half.

"We created something ourselves by hitting the post but our luck's not been falling in front of goal recently."

Garry Fleming had a header come back off the upright but did get on the scoresheet from the spot late on.

"I'm delighted we got the goal because I think over the piece we deserved that," Aitken added.
