Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 321 goals for Real Madrid in 306 appearances

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score for the third successive match as Real Madrid were held by 10-man Malaga to lose top spot in La Liga.

The Portugal striker needs only three goals to pass Raul's mark of 323 to become the club's record goalscorer.

But though Real dominated, he was unable to find the net, heading over Marcelo's cross in added time.

Malaga held out for the last 13 minutes after Nordin Amrabat was sent off for swinging an elbow at defender Marcelo.

Weligton Oliveira had to clear off the line from Isco as Rafa Benitez's side pressed for a late winner.

Barcelona's 2-1 victory over Las Palmas - secured despite losing forward Lionel Messi to injury - took them to the top of the table.

Ronaldo is already Real's top scorer in La Liga history with 230.

The 30-year-old has taken 306 appearances to score his 321 goals for Real. Former Spain striker Raul needed 741 games to set his record.

Celta Vigo, who won 4-1 against Barcelona on Wednesday, missed a chance to go top despite recovering to draw 1-1 at Eibar thanks to an equaliser from former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas.

The result allowed Villarreal to go top after their 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, on-loan striker Leo Baptistao scoring the winning goal against his parent club.

Europa League winners Sevilla climbed off the bottom thanks to their first win of the season, 3-2 against Rayo Vallecano.
