Long-serving Derry City goalkeeper Gerard Doherty has signed a new two-year contract with the Brandywell club.

The 34-year-old's contract expired at the end of the Premier Division season and speculation had linked him with a move to Irish League club Cliftonville.

Doherty is the fourth player to stay on for the 2016 campaign under new manager Kenny Shiels.

The others are skipper Ryan McBride, Aaron Barry and Conor McCormack.

Former Kilmarnock boss Shiels was recently appointed Derry manager after returning from a spell managing BEC Tero Sasana in Thailand.

Paul Hegarty, who had been caretaker boss in the wake of Peter Hutton's dismissal in September, turned down the chance to take the job on permanently.
