Matt Clarke: Ipswich Town defender extends Portsmouth loan

On-loan Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke has extended his stay from Ipswich Town until the end of the season.

Clarke, 19, who has made 16 starts this term for the League Two side, scored his first goal for Pompey in Saturday's 3-0 win against Crawley.

The centre-back has said he is looking to build on what he has learned so far at Fratton Park.

"I want to play my football here, so we'll see what the rest of the season brings," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"I think I've come a long way from the early games in the season, where I did alright, but I was still learning different situations.

"Now, it's more of a structured performance and I know my role."

The defender will have to sit out this weekend's FA Cup third round tie against his parent club at Portman Road.

"I couldn't believe it when the draw happened," Clarke said. "Out of 64 teams in the hat, the two you're involved with draw each other.

"It will be a weird place to be, but we'll see what happens."

Meanwhile, Portsmouth captain Michael Doyle has agreed a one-year extension to his contract, keeping him at Fratton Park until the summer of 2017.

The former Sheffield United midfielder, 34, had initially signed a deal until the end of the season following his release by the Blades.
