Justin Edinburgh: Newport County sell-on clause delights former boss

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh managed Newport County from October 2011 to February 2015

Former manager Justin Edinburgh is delighted Newport County will benefit from Conor Washington's transfer from Peterborough to Queens Park Rangers.

Newport will receive nearly £1m from a 20% sell-on clause for the striker Edinburgh brought to County for £5000.

"The money is a lifeline for a club like Newport," Edinburgh told BBC Radio Wales.

Former postman Washington left Newport for The Posh in 2014 after making 48 appearances for the south Wales club.

Current Gillingham manager Edinburgh, who left the Exiles for the Kent club almost a year ago, believes the money will be a big boost to Newport's Supporters' Trust, who became majority shareholders of the club in October.

'Great for all parties'

"It's a fantastic move for Conor and even more so for Newport. I'm delighted for everyone and it's worked out great for all parties," Edinburgh said.

"We gave Conor a chance, an opportunity. To see the club now get close to £1m, it's fantastic and will help the Supporters' Trust carry on what they have started there."

Edinburgh has also backed new manager Warren Feeney to be a big success at Rodney Parade as County battle against relegation back to the National League.

"I've worked with Warren in doing my coaching badges in Wales and I think they've got a fantastic young manager now in Warren Feeney," he said.

"It's been a difficult time for Newport, this season. I think from where I took over to where I left, I couldn't have done more and it's been upsetting to see how things have gone for the club.

"It was very difficult for me to leave that football club. It was very close to my heart and I took a lot of pride in the work that we did there."
