Two first-half goals from Nathan Boyle earned Derry City a comfortable victory over struggling Sligo Rovers in the second round of the EA Sports Cup.

Boyle put Derry ahead on 34 minutes after being set up by Danish defender Niclas Vemmelund.

The Derry native doubled his home town club's advantage in first-half injury-time after connecting with a flick on from Ronan Curtis.

Derry had little difficulty holding on to their lead in the second half.

The biggest cheer of the night at the Brandywell came when Josh Daniels was introduced as a second-half substitute.

Daniels lost five members of his family - including his mother and sister - in the Buncrana drowning tragedy last month.

With Derry back in action in the League of Ireland against Bohemians at the Brandywell on Friday night, manager Kenny Shiels opted to rest a number of his regulars in Tuesday's contest.

With Rory Patterson, Aaron Barry and Harry Monaghan among the absentees, Shiels handed full debuts to Conor McDermott and Patrick McClean, who is a brother of West Brom and Republic of Ireland star James McClean.

Derry have won the competition, which was formerly known as the League Cup, on a record 10 occasions.
