Oxford United manager Michael Appleton is braced for "more twists and turns" in the League Two promotion race.

The U's held onto third place with Saturday's 2-0 win against Hartlepool and face Carlisle away and Wycombe at home in their last two games.

"I know there will be all sorts happening in the minutes left to play before the end of the season on 7 May," Appleton told BBC Radio Oxford.

Oxford United are a point clear of fourth-placed Bristol Rovers.

"We said before this game (against Hartlepool) that it would be about winning three games," said Appleton. "Now, it's down to two.

"Hopefully the job will still be in our own hands when we come back to the Kassam Stadium for the last game of the season.

"But, you can't call this league and I certainly feel there'll be a few more twists and turns."

After picking up just one point from the two previous games before the Hartlepool victory, Appleton stressed confidence was still high among his squad.

"We've got ourselves into this position after 44 games by doing certain things repeatedly and being professional in our preparation," he added.

"My message to the players has been to keep doing them and hopefully it will have a positive effect."
